What is a Dual Mode Phone?
A dual mode phone is a mobile handset that supports two different types of mobile technologies for making and receiving calls, these being GSM and CDMA. These phones are equally compatible with both GSM and CDMA networks and are essentially 2 phones in one device.
How does it work?
A dual mode phone requires 2 identifying cards, one a SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) card from any GSM network operator such as Vodafone or Digicel, and the other, a UIM (User Identity Module) card from a CDMA network operator such as Telecom Fiji. The 2 cards will have separate numbers, each from the respective service provider.
When making a call, can I select which number I want to use to make the call?
Yes, you can. The dual mode phone allows you to select your preferred network and number to make an outgoing call. This feature allows you to save on call costs by selecting the cheaper service to make outgoing calls from.
When I am on a call on any one number, can I receive another call on the other number?
Yes, you can. Dual mode phone has a feature called Dual Standby* which enables both numbers to be active simultaneously and independently and allows you to do this. So for e.g. when you are talking to a friend on any one number, and if another friend calls on your second number, you can put the first call on hold and answer the second call. Thereafter you can decide which caller you wish to continue the conversation with. However, you cannot talk to both the callers at once.
(* - not all dual mode handsets support the Dual Standby feature, please confirm before buying)
Can I use my existing SIM card from Vodafone, Digicel or INNK in a dual mode phone?
Yes, you can. The dual mode phones are unlocked, which means that you can just remove the SIM card from your existing phone and place it into the GSM slot of the dual mode phone and you can immediately start using it.
Can I place 2 SIM cards in a dual mode phone?
No, dual mode phones work on different mobile technologies and therefore you can only place a single GSM SIM card in it. The other one will be Telecom Fiji’s CDMA UIM card.
Can I use the same contacts list for both numbers?
Yes, you can have a common contacts list and use it for both numbers. You can even transfer your existing contacts list from the current mobile phone onto the dual mode phone.
What other features can I get on the dual mode phone?
Most dual mode phones are quite feature rich and can support all other normal features typically found on a mobile phone such as camera, radio, Bluetooth, ring tones, wallpapers, etc. However, please check the full feature list before buying.
